General Capabilities & Cross Curriculum Priorities
The seven general capabilities are a key dimension of the Australian Curriculum are explicitly addressed in the content of each learning area ( Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority , 2014). Literacy and numeracy along with information and communication technology (ICT), teamwork and critical and creative thinking are all considered essential skills for 21st century learners ( Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority , 2014). According to Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (2014) the seven general capabilities include Literacy, Numeracy, Information and Communication Technology, Critical and Creative thinking, Personal and social capability, Ethical understanding and Intercultural understanding. “The general capabilities encompass the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that, together with curriculum content in each learning area and the cross-curriculum priorities, will assist students to live and work successfully in the twenty-first century” ( Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority , 2014).
The three cross curriculum priorities of Sustainability, Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture are embedded into each learning area ( Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority , 2014).
How could you implement these into your textiles teaching practice? The cross curriculum priority of Sustainability is an essential component of the subject of Home Economics. A strong focus of Sustainability is not only embedded into food and nutrition areas but also textiles as students delve into sustainability in the fashion industry. Students have the opportunity to consider how action can be taken to support ecological sustainability through encouraging the use of more environmentally acceptable goods and services. An appropriate task in the textiles classroom could consider upcycling and its presence in today’s society. The cross curriculum priority of Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia could be embraced through the inclusion of dying techniques such as Shibori Dying and associated activities. Much the same Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture can be highlighted through incorporation of Indigenous patterns and art in the textile classroom through. Engaging and creative lessons can also be centered around the Torres Strait Islander's capacity for innovation through both traditional ceremonies and emerging technologies.
Name 5 teaching resources you could use in your classroom which would meet set requirements. These resources could be YouTube clips, online blogs, twitter pages, etc..........STILL TO COME- http://shibori.org/traditions/techniques/
